Steve Ranger

Born in Kansas into a military family, Steve grew up moving from base to base across the United States and Europe.  This gave him an appreciation of different cultures and points of view, and ensured that he’d always be comfortable around men in uniform.

Steve's Leather journey began in earnest nearly 20 years ago when his partner, Dan Patton, took him to the DC Eagle – which immediately became his favorite bar in DC. Soon after, Dan gave Steve his first leather vest and unwittingly woke the inner beast that would rise up a decade later.

Basically a shy guy, Steve was low key about his Leather fetishes until 2003.  Faced with major neck surgery, he promised himself to be more outgoing and visible in the Leather community when he recovered.  The next year, Steve won the Mr. Double L Leather 2004 contest in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, which fed into the Mr. Mid-Atlantic Leather (MAL) contest.  Competing two weeks after an emergency appendectomy (with his surgical staples still in), Steve became Mr. MAL 2005, and finished in the top 10 at IML that year.

During his year as Mr. MAL, Steve bonded with the members of the Centaur Motorcycle Club (the hosts of MAL) and was surprised and honored to be invited to join the Centaurs as a full member minutes after sashing the new titleholder in 2006.  Not one to sit on the sidelines, Steve soon was elected to the Centaur MC Executive Board as Corresponding Secretary.  He then served as Treasurer and Vice President – and chaired the Mr. MAL contest for five years – before being elected President in January 2011.

Steve usually can be found as a patron, volunteer, den daddy or judge at Leather events.  When not riding his motorcycle, Steve enjoys DC's Capitol Hill neighborhood, where he and Dan have made a home for 19 years and were legally married on April Fools' Day 2010.

A firm believer that we must understand our Leather history in order to continue growing as a community, Steve urges you to join him as a supporter of the Leather Archives & Museum.
